In an earlier era of Michigan whitetail deer-hunting seasons, highways like I-75 and U.S. 27 would be thick with cars and pickups, loaded with gear and groceries, as 600,000 or more men and women headed in one direction for Michigan’s mid-November firearms opener: North.

Last year, Michigan proved again that hunting deer in the Great Lakes State has become upended by a dramatic shift.

More deer now live in the southern half of the Lower Peninsula. More hunters now work the woodlands and farm fields of those extreme Lower Peninsula counties. And most of the nearly 300,000 whitetails that will be taken by hunters during the 15-day firearms season, which begins Saturday morning, will be harvested from counties in the south of Michigan’s “mitten.”
