John David Dingell Jr. became the longest-serving member of the U.S. House of Representatives ever today – and he’ll be heading to the White House this afternoon so President Barack Obama can congratulate him in person.

As a side note, Dingell had already started his third full two-year term in Congress when Obama, 47, was born in Hawaii.

Dingell, the president said in a statement, “has long striven to ensure that every tax dollar is used wisely and that we have a more open, honest, and accessible government. … On behalf of the American people, let me say ‘thank you, Chairman Dingell,’ for your decades of distinguished service.”
