All politicians, especially those who would distract us from real issues, should read this book. I always had a lot of respect for William G. Milliken and, as a former state employee, I can say that the climate in state government changed greatly when he left office. I have heard many people refer to William G. Milliken as the last real governor we had in Michigan. I am a Democrat, but I had real respect for Milliken as he always put the people's good ahead of politics as usual.

DeVos and Granholm could learn something from reading Dave Dempsey's biography of former Governor william Milliken. As with his previous works, Dempsey provides the reader with a meticuously researched history of a period of Michigan's history with plenty of tumulotous change -not unlike our present day.

Dempsey helps us understand that Milliken succeeded by always striving to find the common good by working towards uniting opponents towards the center. I was left with the impression that Milliken's decency and committment to Michigan's environment and natural wealth provided a sober focus to help lead through tough times.
