I believe the map you have included in this article is not from 1871. The map looks like the one produced by Sgt. William O. Bailey of the U.S Signal Corps following the 1881 "Thumb Fire".

October 8th, 1871:
Can you confirm there were several other fires starting with states west of Illinois and Wisconsin and also east of Michigan. Couldn't all or most of these fires have been started by a meteor shower?? In a recent TV program I viewed, the program showed a map of the USA with a diagram of over a dozen fires on that same day from the mid-west to almost the east coast. This looks like a meteor shower to me. Please respond.

Hello,

I stumbled upon your website and learned the details of the great fire of 1871 for the first time. I had read short historical accounts when visiting Manistee and Traverse City, but didn't realize the magnitude of the fire until I read your website. Thanks for the information!

Sincerely,
