Two of the biggest names in tennis history will square off in West Michigan to raise money for charity.

Pete Sampras and John McEnroe will take each other on at the Van Andel Arena on Tuesday, October 28th at 7 p.m. Proceeds from the match will benefit the Miracle Match Foundation which tries to raise awareness about the need for bone marrow donors and provide support for those battling leukemia.

Concerns about the possible impact on Detroit’s casinos led to the state House’s narrow rejection Tuesday of a bill to ban smoking in all Michigan workplaces.

The ban — which would affect casinos, bars, restaurants and even smoke shops — garnered 50 votes, six short of the number needed for approval. Forty-nine members voted against it. Eleven were absent or abstained.

Plans are under way to bring hundreds of new jobs and millions of dollars worth of investments to West Michigan.

Sequenom, Inc., a company based in San Diego, is creating a research location in Grand Rapids.

Grand Rapids-based Bissell Homecare, Inc., is expanding its research, development, and marketing unit at its current location in Walker.

A third company involves subsidiaries of Leggett and Platt. Genesis Seating wants to take the Yamaha plant in Kentwood and turn it into a new manufacturing facility.

Gov. Jennifer Granholm announced Tuesday that Chicago-based Accretive Health, a leading provider of revenue cycle management services to hospitals, plans to expand operations in Detroit and Kalamazoo.
