This is attributable to Michigan being situated on the Great Lakes and having 38,575 square miles of Great Lake water area and 3,126 miles of Great Lake shoreline. Another state source gave the nickname as the Wolverine State. This is not due to a high population of wolverines, but rather a nickname Ohioans gave Michiganians during the 1835 Toledo War between their states. Wolverines have a reputation for being ornery.
