Michigan History: Hollywood's First African-American Cowboy
In the 1930s, when white singing cowboys like Gene Autry and Roy Rogers carved out names for themselves, Herb Jeffries decided there should be black cowboy films especially since there had been many African American cowboys in the American west. Playing the part of Bob Blake, he was the country's first African American film hero when Harlem on the Prairie opened.

Report from the Michigan Film Council meeting at the 2009 Traverse City Film Festival
The meeting of the Michigan Film Council was held as one of the panels at the festival. Director Emery King, film office director Janet Lockwood, Michael Moore and others were on hand answering questions about the film incentive, creating an accredited film crew certification in Michigan and new movies including a remake of Red Dawn.
