I think that we’re all well aware that the Economy Is Not Good and that Gas Prices Are Really, Really High. While the constant drumbeat of bad news may well make us afraid to go anywhere or do much of anything, but is that really how life should be lived?
Food prices are skyrocketing, but have you checked out your local farmers market and local food section at the grocery store? As fuel prices rise, that Michigan strawberry becomes a better deal than the one that hitchhiked in from California, and while this may not be the year for that cross-country drive you’ve been planning, there’s a hundred things to do within a hundred miles from your back door.
Studies show that spending a dollar at a locally owned business returns 80 cents to the community, that in-state travel by Michiganders is a potent economic driver, and that local food can be every bit as good for the environment as organic. I don’t know if there are studies about vacations and health, but I do know that your vacation won’t take itself!
So stay tuned all month (and all summer) as we try and shake things up a little with articles, video and other features designed to help you get local!
