Detroit hosts the inaugural CRITERIUM DETROIT CITY event on July 9th, 2011. A criterium bicycle race is a closed circuit race course where cyclists hurtle around at speeds approaching 40 MPH, offering the opportunity to view the whole fast-paced and exciting race from inches away from the competitors. CRITERIUM DETROIT CITY is a USACycling sanctioned bike race that will feature a variety of race categories, including beginner, professional, children’s and relay races. In addition to the racing, area businesses will be getting into the spirit and there will be a marketplace showcasing Detroit’s creative talent will be set up in the Opera House parking lot. Visit their web site for all the details!
Here’s a video from Marquette’s Twilight Criterium (sadly cancelled for 2011) to give you a taste of the fast-paced action that crits offer. The photo above is from the Cherry Roubaix Criterium in Traverse City (returning August 13, 2011). You can see some more fast-paced action with a crash in this video.
