This is the Mary Jarecki. This ship crashed onto Au Sable reef on July 4, 1883. It weighed 645 tons, and was 200 feet long. She was accidentally run aground in foggy conditions when her crew lost their way. After other ships attempted to pull her off of the reef, the Mary Jarecki was left alone to be destroyed by Lake Superior.
This shipwreck is on the beach west of the Au Sable Point Lighthouse, one of the most isolated Lighthouse stations ever created. The nearest town is Grand Marais, which lies 12 miles to the east.
