The Stove Heats Up
Earlier this week the Tigers assembled an eight player trade with the Florida Marlins for All Star slugger Miguel Cabrera (.320, 34 HR, 119 RBI for the Marlins) and lefty Dontrelle Willis (2 time All Star who is one year off a 22 win, CY Young runner-up effort). In the deal, which was finalized yesterday, the Tigers gave up a pair of first round draft picks in Cameron Maybin & Andrew Miller and some other solid players. A steep price, but in the words of Tiger Manager Jim Leyland “It’s a big one, no doubt about it, but we don’t think 24-year-old superstars come along very often. You can wait a lifetime to get a player like Cabrera.” Check out complete coverage (including video from the press conference) in Hooked Fish: Cabrera, Willis now Tigers from the Detroit Tigers and also the Freep, Detroit News, MLB.com and Roar of the Tigers.
DIBS on Tigers
Speaking of Roar of the Tigers, Sam has the results of 2007 DIBS Awards (also available see the press release). The awards are given by the Detroit Independent Baseball Scribes: Bless You Boys, the Daily Fungo, the Detroit Tigers Weblog, the Fanhouse, From the Copa, Grandy Report, Leelanau Sports Guy, Mack Avenue Tigers, Motown Sports Revival, Take 75 North, TigerBlog, Tiger Tales, the Wayne Fontes Experience, Where Have You Gone, Johnny Grubb? They selected Curtis Granderson as their breakout player, Justin Verlander as pitcher of the year and Magglio Ordonez as Tiger of the Year. No surprises, but if you click around their blogs you get some great insight as to what made the Tigers tick (and what didn’t) in 2007.
