DeVos Calls for a Halt to Nonessential SpendingThe Detroit Free Press reports that in a speech to the Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in Southfield, Republican gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos said nonessential spending in Lansing must stop. He called for elimination of the First spouse's office, Michigan Surgeon General, and Michigan Cool Cities. Cool Cities was Gov. Granholm's first signature initiative and has helped pay for building renovations, water parks, farmers markets and neighborhood clean-ups.DeVos said he won't need a taxpayer-funded office for his wife, Betsy DeVos. DeVos' spokesman John Truscott said "That's one of the first things he'd look at to cut. It's a position that doesn't have a whole lot of impact on the public."
