UP sulfide mining permit withdrawn by DEQ
John Flesher (AP) reports that Kennecott Minerals' plan to drill for nickel and copper in the UP was thrown off track yesterday when regulators acknowledged they hadn't adequately considered reports questioning whether the roof would hold up. In addition to withdrawing the tentative application approval, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality Director Steven Chester cancelled hearings.
