Monday June 18, 2007: Clueless in the Capitol?

compuware by Artsy TIn the spirit of Five Things You Need to Know About Michigan, we’re going to try to post a more or less daily page that gives you a little idea of what’s happening in the Michigan news, events, the weather and on Absolute Michigan. We welcome (really!) your comments and links about anything at all in Michigan or your thoughts.

The MLUI reports that the budget deal between Michigan’s governor and Legislature temporarily spared public schools from cuts, but at the expense of state colleges and universities. The deal underscores the fact that state leaders still have no real solution to Michigan’s financial crisis, say many observers. They note that thriving states like California, Utah, Tennessee, and North Carolina discount tax-cutting mantras and invest in education, rapid transit, farmland conservation, environmental protection, and urban redevelopment.

We added a new page on Michigan’s Mackinac Bridge to help keep track of all the information about the past and present of Michigan’s most recognizable structure.

Today’s photo from the Absolute Michigan pool is of the Compuware building in Detroit, taken by Artsy T. She writes: it recently occurred to me that i shoot a lot of scary pics of my city and surrounding areas. don’t be too scared. we have “normal” buildings too. infact, this city is on an amazing come back. for all of you out-of-towners, if you haven’t been here in a while or ever, you should check it out. it gives me the chills to see this gorgeous city coming back alive after a long period of decay and destruction. it’s truly amazing. (she also provides a link to the Wikipedia entry for the Compuware Building)

Looking at 90s and 80s across the state today – I think that Copper Harbor is about the only place in the state that has traditional June weather today. Check out Copper Harbor on Absolute Michigan for all kinds of links including the Delaware Copper Mine and Ft. Wilkins State Park.
